Apenas as mazelas do dia a dia. Coisas as quais parece que vamos aos habituando e as encaramos como parte do nosso dia a dia. Tudo dantes como no quartel de Abrantes. A cada instante. Em cada esquina. E salvem-se quem puder e conseguir. Estamos assustados. Temerosos e desconfiados.

You will see some good houses at a reasonable price in Bairro dos Estados near the town centre but a long way from the beach. It is also close to some facilities. A few blocks back from the beach about 15 mins brisk walk will take you out of the tourist belt into Tambauzinho and Mirimar. Mostly houses though there are towers too. Jp is a small city so dont worry too much about distance from the schools. Tamashin: thanks for the above it is veryhelpful. Glad to see all the great news about JP land is being used,,,,it is nice not to say a word and have you all say it for me,,,,.

I decided to visit JP for myself after selecting it from several other cities including Flori, Curitiba amongst others. Further, if any one puts JP in the search facility as Camzao recently did you will get many results to help you with your research. I agree with you, Sterling, get as much info as possible before making a decision. I could think of worse places to make a new start in life and you will have a benchmark for when you want to move on. Hi Stirling, I have read that articleand lots of other stuff. My wife is Brazilian and we have visited Brazilmany times and have spent the last 3 years planning for this move.

We are going to Joao Pessoa because for the recommendations we have got fromfriends and family and have rented a flat there for 1 month from 1st July to see what it is like in high season , in that time wewill take a very close look at the area and decide if its what we want ingeneral terms, if it looks a good prospect we will rent again until we find thehouse we want.

London Lad, Could she not have come out earlier and looked around? I know several Europeans whose wives moved in advance and laid the ground for them and even there there were many problems. I know because I am one of these guys. For your own good I would recommend preparing a Plan B. Your post is headed Dear London Lad.

AGENDA CULTURAL

You could have PMed him. Instead you chose an open forum, inviting comment. So heres mine. Just what is wrong with asking advice? Thats what the Forum is for. Here is a guy trying to get as much preparation done as possible and you appear to critisizing him. I dont want that to put people off.

The more questions the merrier. In your own words you say you had a lot of problems even though your wife did a lot of the ground work. I had been coming to Brasil since but knew nothing of JP and wasnt able to rely on my brasilain family. I did a lot of backround reading including Capt Bills posts before selecting JP for a long term visit during which I decided to move here for good.

In another post you mentioned John Fitzpatricks article on JP. Read it again. I have it here in front of me. A lot about history, a town guide etc but you couldnt move to a town on the strength of that. Good advice Sterling have a plan B. We did. We moved to Minas from England. After 4 years we invoked plan b and now we are trying JP. I still cant believe you asked the questions that you asked. I hope you have resolved a lot of the problems you mentioned in your post.

Could she nothave come out earlier and looked around? I know several Europeans whose wivesmoved in advance and laid the ground for them and even there there were manyproblems. My wife has also been put in touch with someone who worksfor the local government and has already sent her CV and this contact is nowpassing her info on the jobs that could be on offer to, as you know Brazilworks on who you know not what you know and having worked in TV news beforecoming to the UK she has many contacts all over Brazil.

How can I decide where to buy a house without going andlooking for myself? How can I find out about schools and local healthcare without going myself? I think the people who make mistakes in this world are theones who send others to look and then except what they tell than without goingand looking for themselves, it has to suit my family not anyone else, so it isus that need to go and look.

What a hit! Over and out. Boa sorte. London Lad,,,, good talk,,,,ask questions and then go find out for yourself,,,see you here in JP land,,,,, have a good day in Brazil and see you,,, captbillnbrazil. Thank the Lord, Capt Bill, I was wondering when you were going to jump back on board.

We are renting a flat by the beach at Poco for a month while we look around the area and will maybe rent somewhere else after that once we have got an idea of the areas we are interesting in buying. I was in JP last August and they are still working on the International Terminal at the airport, due to open sometime in Looks like a few people are moving there over the next fewmonths. I love the easy ones. Thats what I decided to do. My daughter and I went down to Bessa to Bessa ourselves So its 4. I looked towards the Tambau hotel in the distance. I could probably count two dozen people.

Then I turned to look in the other direction, perhaps another two dozen. A guy was flying a kite in the sea. It obviously got the better of him as it had him all over the place. In the distance what I thought might be birds turned out to be more kite flyers struggling with their hobby. We ran in and out of the water, how come sea water is so warm twas never like that in England. People would take their children to the beach and watch them turn blue in the water while they ate rock hard chips and turd like sausages from the beach side cafe. A cyclist here, a few more joggers there, my daughter tugs my arm to go home.

Jolted back to a soggy reality, we ambled back home. It was getting dark anyway. Or call him at the phone numbers he has posted in one of his messages? After all you are both in JP. I am sure I speak on behalf of gringoes readers when I say how much I would love to hear how you got on. Just a short note to say that JPs rainy season is in May and the first few weeks of June.

Its still warm though and much greener ofcourse. If we drink a cool one under cover to avoid avoid watering down the agua de coco so be it, the beach will still be there. For all you weather buffs, it seems to rain mainly at night during the rainy season, well sofar. Apparently it peters out around the end of June. Its still very warm, though in saying that, a chap turned up for work in a leather jacket because the wether was turning.

Thats the worst spell of weather we have had for ages. Hahaha, Tamashin! The smiley is hilarious! Loved it! Ahhhh, Joao Pessoa, such a bore. Sitting at a beach bar drinking a cold brew or sucking up coconut water through a straw. Looking at the bikinis walking by. The rainy season. Movie theaters, ah yes — good for a rainy day. Maybe today it will be pineapple. I am not sure where Dona Brancas is but I was out along Manaira upto Bessa towards MAG shopping and people were swimming It might be the rainy season but its still very warm.

Tamashin — true, true. Rain or clouds, you still find hearty souls out swimming in the warm waters. Many varieties of cachaca. They also have glasses of chopp — baby size and regular size. They open at a. Many thanks, kind sir, truly a gem amongst gems by the sounds of things. Joao Pessoa has been blessed with many similar places of refreshment and repose. Shall be hard to find, me thinks, amongst them all. Perhaps for all those who live in JP or are about to we could complete a list of recommended places to eat or drink. However, restaurants are all about taste in all its guises.

In general all the beach bars from Manaira down to the end of Capo Branco are all of varying quality from the coxinha type bar to the bells and whistles bar. All the ones I have tried have in the main been pretty good value for money, though the Bahamas bar was unneccesarily expensive for what it offered. Didnt try the food though everyone seemed happy enough. On the other side of the road are the bigger restaurants. I will say now that I had an emergency burger in Bobs and was ill for 3 days afterwards.

Never again. There are some very grand restaurants which are very highly rated by the locals at the Cabo Branco end. Its range included al a carte and rodizios of sushi, pizza and meat. I still havent been there. I did try this out and found the food to be a little above average but expensive. The sunday buffet was particularly good.

They have a resident piano player on a grand piano who can knock out a tune as well asthe best of them. There are several others too which I will put a name to some time, non of which will disappoint you gastronomically but will make your wallet frown. There are many sushi bars, too numerous to mention as well as chinese restaurants limited menu and not like those of England I was never disappointed in any of them though I have found a tiny sushi bar in Bessa which I frequent regularly.

Interesting I was in a nobs and swells Japenese restaurant and found the mall sushi more superior. There are many gourmet restaurants which I havent tried yet but when passing they are always well attended. Finally, Joao Pessoa is noted for its fish and to this end there is a very fine restaurant towards the very end of Cabo Branco towards the lighthouse. There are very fine views across the bay. Next door there is a cheaper restaurant with equally fine views but the quality of food is nowhere near as good. Real cod, not the salted type, worth every penny. They even cater for children, providing colouring books and pencils.

I noted that in the Restaurante de Caju also good and had a park for children ran an in house English language courses for their staff. In writing this I can see that a more detail paper could have been provided so I will write an article for the home page instead. Five minutes south to the cross roads and then left towards the sea front brings you to another highly rated and late opening sushi bar. Miss that and when you get to the sea front there is a pie bar right on the corner.

That place has gone up market and as you say now has a girl playing a grand piano.

Before they updated it it used to sell great prawn dishes at a very reasonable cost and we have often eaten there. The cost has gone up now like everywhere but I still found the food pretty good value for money. Here is a link to video talking up all the charms of JP. Certainly shows off the best side of JP and Brazilian life. Tamashin do you recognise the eating places. We decided to try Casa do Bachlhau at Av.

Franca Filha, 52 in Manaira, Joao Pessoa. The atmosphere is certainly upscale and the service really was impeccable. The cod fish was excellent. We started with bolinhos de bacalhau for an appetizer which were delicious, but left you wanting for more. This was an excellent dining experience.

The only downside was that it was a too expensive to eat there often. Really not too bad but I think the Terere Restaurant offers a better deal for less money. Nevertheless, Casa do Bachlhau is great for a special outing, anniversary, etc. Friday nights they have live Portuguese music. Riodog, as you say you really are a cheapskate!

Does all of the bachlhau cod in Brazil come from the North Sea or is any caught local to Brazil?? Fantastic, thanks for taking the time to post that link. It is an excellent video. There are scenes from the Praia de Jacare guy playing the sax , Lagoa in the centre of Joao Pessoa several scenes Historical centre, the lighthouse and praia de seixes, several churches including St Francisco Hist.

Grand Hotel near Lagoa amongst others. JP, not perfect but very, very good. No problem. I liked it too. I am doing the hard sell on JP to my wifeand made a point of getting her to translate sentence by sentence thecommentary on this video to assist in my pitch. My wife and I are considering approaching the Council to see if we can do the video in English. Afterall, the Curitiba video in English is excellent too. Also at the Bahamas, Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday eveings from 6p. The sushi is made fresh in front of you — many varieties along with fresh salmon and shimp and other goodies.

A real deal!! If you remember or go there again, please let me know. Scoose me but am I the only person who is getting — shall we say — a little cheesed of with this constant chit-chat about Joaa Pessoa. Come on people. There are hundreds of places in Brazil. Why so much blooming space devoted to Joao pessoa? I was there years ago during a trip round the northeastern towns and to be honest can remember nothing about it except it was near Recife and quite far from Salvador — I remember a horrible trip down there on a broken down bus — and had good beach spoiled I thougt by a horrible concrete hotel that was practically in the sea.

Mind you I wish I was I was back in Brazil. I had a great time in Rio but it seems to be all violence these days there. Angora dos Reis was also great. LOL nice one Fran. Sorry if some of us are a little excited to find other ex-pats here in JP sharing dining experiences. I hope you have a better bus trip on your future travels in Brazil. Although Angra dos Reis have nice islands, it is good for tourism but hardly a place to live. The town itself is horrible! You have to spend your days on a boat or on the islands….

It was great but sadly I could only manage seven of the ten dishes on offer…too much for me but very good. I havent regreted it so far. Funny innit how some people think they own a forum and think they can tell other people to keep out. Is that OK with you Mr Riodog or do we need your permission???????????????

You dont own the interbnet you know. I spent about six days there four years ago. Oh yes — this is more like it! Someone get Frankie and Nancee on the line, they are missing it again. You dont own the interbnet you know.. Welcome to Gringoes.

Institutional Framework

With an attitude like yours I hope I doubt you will appreciate what others are saying and doing on this forum. Brazil is a big piece of land and there are many wonderful places to reside. I just happen to think that JP is my kind of town sorry. I just happen to enjoy a smaller city with great people and wonderful restaurants.

Do rethink visiting us here sometime after you have cooled down. Scoose me but am I the only person who is getting — shall we say — a littlecheesed of with this constant chit-chat about Joaa Pessoa. I was there years ago during a trip round the northeastern towns and to behonest can remember nothing about it except it was near Recife and quitefar from Salvador — I remember a horrible trip down there on a broken down bus- and had good beach spoiled I thougt by a horrible concrete hotelthat was practically in the sea.

Mind you I wish I was I was back inBrazil. I had a great time in Riobut it seems to be allviolence these days there. Angorados Reis was alsogreat. Funny innit how some people think they own a forum and think they can tellother people to keep out. Youdont own the interbnet you know. I started this thread as I am moving to Brazilat the end of June and my Brazilian wife wanted to have a look at Joao Pessoaas many of her Brazilian friends have told herit is an up and coming city with low crime, good schools and major growth potential. With the enlargement of the EU Spain is having to become anet contributor to the EU and many ex-pats have seen the writing on the wallthat taxes will have to increase in Spain to finance the expansion of the EU.

I think there are only about 2 current threads on Joao Pessoaso I would hardly except that this board has somuch blooming space devoted to Joao Pessoa? Have other people told you to keep out? Maybe you could ask or start some threads on the places youliked when you were in Braziland I suspect you may find you get a more positive response from other posters. Are you planning to move to Brazilyourself? Were you in Brazillong enough to loose your tourist head and look at things as a resident? The problem these days is the violence in the larger cities of Rio de Janeiro and Sao Paulo.

Also, over the years you have a lot of poor people from the northeast moving to the larger cities for jobs or a better life as they perceive it. Usually the man goes and the wife and kids stay in Ceara then once the money is flowing, he brings the kids down and the whole family lives in a two room shack in Rocina and commute to the south zone for work. Rio is overpopulated and people from the Favelas are seen everywhere on the streets scarring and scamming tourists.

Little kids bother tourists begging for money and those same kids will stab you in the back if they could. They touch you on the arm, sometimes grabbing your arm in desperation. Crazy stuff happens every day in Rio that does not hit the news or papers and the stuff that does is killing their reputation like the Leblon beach attack a few years ago in broad daylight, the kid from Portugal stabbed in broad daylight on the beach in front of Copacabana Palace and recently the French guys, working a non-profit organization to help Favela kids, they were assaulted in their own apartment, stabbed, burned and left for dead.

There are no rules really and the justice system is for the well-off. Brazil has serious problems and big cities like SP and Rio are even worse. Now for the big hitter: the Police are no help at all. Think about this! I know for a fact; if your a foreign person — man or woman and you have a problem in Rio, the Police will not help you. Trust me, I know. The Police are corrupt and they really despise foreign single men visiting Rio because they lump us all in as Sex Tourists.

But you must speak some Portuguese, decent Portuguese. Think about it, Rio is seen as an international destination around the world. The only remedy is you have to stick around for a long time and people will, over time, get used to seeing you together and they will eventually accept you. From what I understand, the smaller cities like JP do not have these big city problems. But I think one day places like JP might have the same problems now presented in larger cities like Rio de Janeiro, maybe not in my lifetime, at least I hope not.

Small cities and off the beaten path places like JP will one day have the same problem now presented in Rio de Janeiro, maybe not in my lifetime but it will happen, but I do see it happening. I think the above is correct, but change comes slowly toBrazil and while my understanding is that crime is very low in JP it willincrease as the number of tourists grow unless the Government does what it canto ensure that the locals also benefit from the growing wealth in the area. Interestingly enough my wife has been working on a projectfor a while now looking at how to make it possible for the local people tobenefit from the growing tourist population.

She used to be a journalistin Brazilbefore she came to the UKthat is why she has so many contacts around Brazil:. I think that is the key to making JP a better place to liveto ensure that immigrants to the area integrate and spend their money in thelocal eccomany and support local business where possible or before we knowwhere we are it will be an us and them situation, very much like it isbecoming in the UK. I want to add that I sincerely hope and look forward to the day Brazil improves because I love Brazil and the people there and think hard about this: Rio has everything a city needs to be the most beautiful, most productive city in the world.

Why is JP, a state capital, repeatedly referred to on this forum as a small city? Joao Pessoa has over , residents and the metropolitan area is over a million. I would venture to guess that this is larger than a good number of state capitals in the US. JP in a general sense is a big city. Sorry for the mis-reference of JP. Afterall, many people never find that. Amusing how people can actually start arguements with themselves. Does anyone remember the scene in Fawlty Towers where the unhappy lady guest complains about the view from the Torquay hotel bedroom window?

I was reminded of this scene when reading the above. Guess it is safe to assume that Fran is off on another tangent to what the rest of us are on about in this thread — which is as Monica suggested — a place to settle rather than visit as a tourist, or even as sex tourist! If you wanna open up a new thread in regards to the merits and demerits of JP as a sex touro destination go for it. I think this is a pretty open forum. All ears here anyways. In regards to Gringos. Very subtle I know, but eh…. About getting the locals in on the benefits of any growth in the region, I imagine it is more of an economical structual problem than anything, and with Lula increasing min wage etc, economic rhetoric aside, a good thing.

How about the industry in JP etc? I share your sentiments Infact its too easy to feel comfortable in JP. As muted before, it may not be everybodys cup of tea, but the majority who come here seem to like it. I have another unfortunate story related to the big city element and this did not hit the Newspapers. Fast forward a few years and he purchased a Flat in the south zone.

He come home one night and some guys rushed him, killed him and the apartment went back to the Brazilian partner. Now let me see. Your friend knew a guy who had a friend that knew somebody who went to Rio. I love a specific story!!! Police report that a group of criminals arrived in the town recently and began an Internet campaign to try and make gullible foreigners believe that it was a paradise where foreigners could live in security and avoid the violence and misery which is prevalent in the region. The site also offered sexual enticements. They would offer to arrange accommodation and to meet them at the airport and handle daily matters.

In another case, a Scandinavian visitor was taken to the town by a man who claimed to be English and suggested they have meal in a beachfront restaurant. E-mail this to a friend. Printable version. I am sorry that your personal experience has been so negative, but you talk like an authority on crime in the big cities of Brazil, which you are clearly not. The only hard number I could find in a quick search was about 5 years old and listed 54 for SP and 59 for Rio.

Louis with Larger American trouble spots Detroit, Washington score in the 40s. If you break down these murders further you notice several things that should put the worried tourist a little bit at ease. First, we have the type of murders from a Sao Paulo study :. Am J Public Health. No real surprise; as in every major city, crime concentrates in a few neighborhoods, but occasionally spills over. Whenever it does spill over you get wide press coverage, which makes people assume it is omnipresent. Regarding crimes on foreign tourists: the vast majority of these are muggings. The claim about the police not helping foreigners is exaggerated, too.

There may be some officers who look down on foreigners, but the instructions from the top are to take good care of one of the most important assets to the city, tourists. It may not be the best place to raise a family, but certainly not the worst consider the opportunities and cultural aspects as well.

Fran, please post a link to the original article. It is sometimes difficult to convey the sheer scale of violence in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro, for example, there are an average of 4, homicides each year. The police are responsible for about 1, of these. Heavily-armed teenage narco-trafficants carry out most of the rest. For example, while Palestinian and Israeli children died in the Intifada between September and August , a total of children were shot dead in Rio during the same period.

There is a similar extremely obvious connection between crime and social inequality in Brazil. Would you please post the link for this story? Two men do not an international organised crime gang make and shocking though the incident may be if true I am sure similar incidents occur across the world in airports.

Heathrow has had its fair share of incidents in the past regarding gullible tourists. The quality of the writing is far too crude to be a BBC item. The first line says it all — no way would the police cheif advise anyone to stay away from an entire city apart from a state of emergency like a hurricane! He would be fired in a moment! Theres something else I would like to touch on about policing in Joao Pessoa and it ties in with what Joe Public in England was always demanding ie; more police on the streets.

The police are on the streets in force but I never feel threatened by it. They cycle around in groups of twos and threes, on quad bikes, beach buggies and horses. You see a lot of police cars patrolling around as well as the big white and green Blazers and the choque team Blazers. At this moment on many street corners you can see white community tents with a police car or bikes outside.

For me, the police contribute to the community feeling of JP as they are a part of the community. That might be difficult for some people to swallow what with the overall perceptions of the police. However, we pay them to protect us and our rights and if they are out on the streets doing just that, then we cant complain when we see them doing it. Oops, soap box is moving a bit, must get down. However, while this is clearly a tragedy, these same statistics can also be used to support my earlier points.

The favelas are so violent that they are responsible for a large share of the total violent crimes committed in the entire country. The occasional spill out is what gets all the attention. Had he chosen a formatting from the Sun forthis story I might have been fooled more easily but even they write better. Fran,Fran where do you get these stories? Its still a good day Capt Bill. Not speaking from first hand experience here, only what have heard in documentaries etc.

The gangs such as CV are pretty tough enforcing their laws inside the slums but happy to take their cut of the proceeds from any of the muggings in say Coppocabana? I guess we all see situations differently. I grew up in Los Angeles near East L. I know what scared is. But for me, I still love JP and what it has to offer.

Sure there is crime and poverty, but on what scale? Jacktokyo: Yes sir, without a doubt. My opinions are based from my personal experiences in the Rio de Janeiro area over the last eight years. That stated, I feel my experience speaks for itself. Actually I read it and then looked at the date but was surprised to see it was not the 1st April. Really did he she or it expect anyone with a modicum of sense to be taken in by a very poor cut and paste exercise.

Good try but no cigar. I just dont see the point of doing things like that. Tamashin, calm down now and lets all forget the basket case Fran. You now need to grab your pen, paper and wallet and start off round the local restaurants and bars to research the definative guide to eating out in JP land. I look forward to your article being printed on the mother ship and promise that I will treat you and your family to a meal at the tastiest sounding place when we get there.

However I will not contribute to your Weight Watchers subscription. What gives? Very tormented soul no doubt. The Picui Praia Restaurant is on Av. This restaurant has individual and family-style dishes with the flavor of the northeast. Mangai in Manaira shouldnt go without a mention. It is a very large rustic style restaurant which apparently provides a sample of every type of north eastern quisine.

Over 40 dishes are laid before you in a large hall for you to sample. Each dish has an explanation of what you are eating in English. All the waiters are dressed in traditional fashion, without guns, and there is an air conditioned section too. Children are catered for and there is a little park next to the carpark. No alcohol is served.
